Training Courses

At Inverness Leisure we run training courses on a regular basis for associates working at our facility. Places on these courses are also available to interested participants from outside the organisation.

Courses include the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ), various First Aid courses including the HSE First Aid at Work, and Manual Handling - see details below.

We offer a first class training environment, and NPLQ course participants benefit from the extensive range of features in our Leisure Waters and Competition Pool facilities.

National Pool Lifeguard Qualification Training Course - Unit 1 and Unit 2

The Royal Lifesaving Society National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ), awarded by The Instutute of Qualified Lifeguards, is an internationally recognised qualification for lifeguards working in a swimming pool environment. It is accredited by the Government's Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, and meets Health and Safety standards. The NPLQ is the first requirement for professional lifeguards and is of value to people working or wanting to work in the sport and leisure industry.

The qualification is valid for 2 years. During this period the lifeguard must accumulate at least 20 hours of training, and after 2 years must re-take an assessment to extend the qualification.

Duration/timing:   Unit 1 - normally 5 days, 8am - 5pm
  Unit 2 - normally 1 day, 8am - 5pm

Unit 1 will include

  • rescue skills dry and wet
  • basic first aid
  • Cardio Pulminary Resuscitation
  • pool lifeguard theory
  • spinal cord injury management

This will take place through theory and practical sessions with visual aids and demonstrations.

Please come comfortably dressed as you will be in/out of the water during the day. Bring swimwear and a couple of towels for each day and a t-shirt for wearing in the pool.

Tea/coffee/refreshments will be provided but lunch will not be included.

This will be a close contact course with tasks such as towing casualties and casualty handling.

An assessment will be held on the afternoon of the last day for Unit 1. Full attendance for the duration of the course is essential. The trainer will reserve the right to decide whether candidates will sit the assesment at the end of the course.

Unit 2 will include

  • the lifeguard and the law
  • the swimming pool and the role of the lifeguard
  • Normal Operating Procedures
  • Emergency Action Plans
  • provision and use of play equipment in swimming pools
  • diving and jumping in swimming pools
  • flumes, water slides and other features in swimming pools

Unit 2 does not involve in-water work and on-going assessment is carried out through the day.


First Aid Courses

Courses available:

  • 4 day HSE First Aid at Work
  • 1 day Emergency First Aid
  • 2 day Refresher First Aid

Courses will contain:

  • Practice and principles of First Aid
  • Respiratory system and circulatory systems
  • Unconsciousness
  • Casualty handling
  • Emergency action
  • CPR
  • Shock
  • Bleeding and wounds
  • Burns
  • Fractures
  • First Aid boxes

The syllabus will vary depending on course chosen; the above lists some of the areas you may cover.

Your instructor for the course will vary the delivery of the syllabus between lecture sessions, practical sessions involving the whole group, demonstrations and visual aids.

Candidates showing a good practical ability in carrying out resuscitation skills, treating an unconscious casualty and applying dressings / bandages will be awarded a certificate of competence. As well as the practical assessment candidates will be required to complete written and oral questions and carry out an initiative test of skills. The certificate will be valid for a period of 3 years from the date of the course.


Manual Handling Course

Half day course: learn the basics of safe moving and handling techniques
Includes:

  • Manual Handling regulations
  • Hazards / risk explained
  • Risk Assessment process
  • How the body works
  • Principles of efficient movement
  • Practical lifting and handling

Training will take place through theory and practical sessions with visual aids and demonstrations.

Tea / coffee refreshments will be provided.


Training Course Terms and Conditions

  • The maximum number of candidates is 12 and the minimum required is 6.
  • Candidates must be 16 or above.
  • A 50% deposit (or full payment) must accompany the booking form. This may be sent by post with a cheque/postal order made payable to 'Inverness Leisure' or may be paid at reception. Please do not send cash through the post. Full payment must be made at least 7 days prior to the course start date.
  • Confirmation of acceptance on a course will be made within 7 days of receipt of the booking form and payment.
  • Should you cancel your course within 7 days of its commencement date you will forfeit the 50% deposit or 50% of the total cost paid.
  • Should you cancel your course prior to 1 week before its start date you will be refunded any payments made less 20% of the total cost of the course to cover administration.
  • Should you leave the course during its duration you will not be entitled to a refund.
  • Cancellations should be made initially by 'phone and followed up in writing.
  • Inverness Leisure reserve the right, with due notification, to re-schedule or cancel any course if candidate numbers are not reached. In this instance a full refund of your deposit (or full payment) will be made.
  • There are cafe facilities and drink/snack vending machines within the facility.
  • Please note that lunches will not be provided.
  • Please bring swimwear, towel etc. (NPLQ and other 'wet' courses).
